Zulabelle (Belle) Macon Deviney Smith, 82, of Victoria, was born November 9, 1929 in Edna, Texas to Henry and Effie Macon.
She graduated from Breckinridge High School in San Antonio in 1946. She married Forrest Edward Deviney in San Antonio in June of 1948 and they raised two children in Victoria and Corpus Christi. She was a Certified Professional Secretary and her career included stints as secretary with Jefferson Standard and administrative assistant to Charles Butt of H.E.Butt Grocery Company. After Forrest's death in 1984, she married James N. Smith on October 25, 1986. Finally, she worked as office manager and corporate secretary for Sterrett Supply Company, from which position she retired in 1991 to spend more time with her grandchildren and making dewberry cobblers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Forrest Deviney; her sister, Melva Macon Karlsruher; and her daughter, Judith Lynn Deviney Matthews. She died on March 5, 2012 in Victoria, Texas after a lengthy illness, and is survived by her loving husband Jim Smith; sister Lois Macon Webernick,; son Thomas Forrest Deviney (Cindi); sister-in-law Barbara Migl,; son Jim Smith (Diane); son-in-law Lee Matthews (Diana); grandchildren Cory Matthews (Amanda); Jason Matthews; Erin Matthews, Christina Smith Goldblatt (Josh), Michael Smith, James Smith, Aislinn Deviney, Forrest Macon Deviney; great-granddaughters Judith Avery Matthews and McKenzie Smith; nieces and nephews across Texas as well as extended family and many friends.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Victoria at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012, with the Revs. Jarrell Sharp and Marilyn Roeder presiding. Interment will follow at a later date.
