John Nolan Bennett, Sr., 90, Cobb County Police Chief Retired, of Acworth, died Tuesday, January 24, 2017.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 Friday afternoon in the chapel of Collins Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Rolling Hills Memory Gardens.

A native of Woodstock, Chief Bennett had lived in the Woodstock/Acworth area for most of his life and served his country in the US Army during WW II.

He began his career in law enforcement in 1960 with the Smyrna Police Department.

In 1962, he joined the Cobb County Police Department, working his way through the ranks to become Chief.

He retired from the department in 1991. Chief Bennett was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #13, the Police Officers Association of Georgia, and the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

He was also a member of the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church in Cartersville.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Bonnie Abernathy Bennett of Acworth; children, Nola (Dale) Bennett White of Canton, Lola Bennett Carere of Acworth, Judy (Jimmy) Bennett Shipp of Ethel, MS, Nancy (Cecil) Bennett Cahela of Powder Springs, and John Nolan Bennett, Jr., of Acworth; 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; sister, Rachel Gibson of Marietta; brother, Kennon (Helen) Bennett of Acworth; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Thursday evening at Collins Funeral Home.
