Hazel (Veal) Byrd, 94, of La Grange, Texas, formally of Bunnlevel, NC, died Friday, January 20, 2017.
Hazel was born in Deepstep, GA on January 19, 1923, the daughter of Robert F. Veal and Annie Bell (Andrews) Veal. She graduated from Sandersville High School in 1939 and took business courses at Campbell College in 1942. Hazel married Lawrie M. Byrd on May 8, 1948 at the Friendship Baptist Church Parsonage in Bunnlevel, NC and she lived with her family in the same home in Bunnlevel from 1950 until she moved to Texas in September, 2012.
Hazel continued to be a faithful member of the Deepstep United Methodist Church and she attended the Friendship Baptist Church in Bunnlevel.
Hazel worked for a time at Thompson Davis Insurance Company in Lillington, NC and then worked for 15 years at Campbell University as the secretary of the Alumni Association until her retirement in 1983.
She loved cooking, baking, crocheting, knitting and tending to her garden and blueberry bushes.
She is survived by one son, Marshall Byrd and wife, Jolene, of La Grange; one sister, Jane Veal of West Palm Beach, FL; one sister-in-law, Martha Byrd of Dunn, NC; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Byrd of Lutz, FL; one grandson, Dustan Byrd and fiancée, Emily Givens, of Castle Hayne, NC; two granddaughters: Ashley Byrd of Nacogdoches, TX and Laurie Byrd of Carrollton, TX; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrie; and in-laws: Franklin D. Byrd and wife, Katherine; eldest son, Carey Byrd; five brothers and their wives; six sisters and their husbands; three brothers-in-law and their wives; one sister-in-law and her husband; and one sister-in-law.
Funeral Services will be held in Bunnlevel, NC.
