Born February 26, 1928, at home near Unionville, MD in Frederick County. She was the daughter of the late Albert M. Purdum and Mamie R. Smith. Twice married, she was the wife of the late James W. Mullinix, Sr. and the late Melvin Carper.
In her early years, she was employed at Jenkins Brothers Canning Factory in Thurmont. She worked five years as a cafeteria worker at Carroll County Public Schools and as a custodian at the Westminster Senior Center. She also did a variety of home jobs for other people. She attended Stone Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was an active member of her community and was a life member of the Carroll Hospital Center working as a volunteer in the hospital gift shop. She volunteered for the American Red Cross blood donation program for five years and for seven years for the Meals-On-Wheels Program. She was a member of the Westminster Chapter 897 Women of the Moose for thirty-two years and the Senior Citizens Club. She was a fourteen year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and eighteen years with the North Carroll Seniors Club.
She enjoyed traveling, crocheting, craft shows and playing bingo.
Surviving are daughter Patricia A. Petry of Gettysburg; grandsons Perry L. Petry and Phillip J. Petry; great-grandchildren Phillip L., Derrick J. and Anthony J. Petry. Also survived by 2 great-great-grandchildren and 5 nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother Carlton M. Purdum in 1968; son James William Mullinix, Jr. in 2004; daughter Ethel R. (Becky) Mullinix in 2008; son-in-law Paul M. Petry in 2005 and step-son Steven Carper in 2015.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Rd., Westminster, where funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm. Rev. Steven Cho officiating. Interment will follow in Howard Chapel Church Cemetery in Long Corner, MD in Howard County.
