John H. & Charlene (Markey) Captain

John H. Captain, 74, of New Paris, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at his home.

Born Feb. 5, 1930, in Oklahoma, he was the son of Oscar and Elsie (Davis) Captain. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, and was a self-employed contractor. He was a past member of the New Paris EMS, past president of the New Paris Kiwanis Club, New Paris Boosters Club, and had been a coach for Little League baseball, Pee Wee football and basketball in New Paris.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, B. Charlene Captain, in 2002; brothers, Ralph Captain, Don Captain, Edwin Captain and Harold Captain.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Lisa Captain of Navarre, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and James M. Sheppard of New Paris; brother, Leonard (Loretta) Captain of Miamisburg; a sister, Betty (Herb) Cressel of Brookville; sister-in-law, Betty Captain of Lynchburg, Ohio; four grandchildren, Taryna Johnson, Jaymi Sheppard, Derek Captain and Katie Captain; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Alan D. Keesling officiating. Burial, with full military services provided by the Preble County Honor Guard, will be in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Northwest Emergency Squad & Fire Department, 135 N. Washington St., New Paris, OH 45347, or to New Paris Church of Christ.
