CONNER

Ernest D. Conner, son of Ernest Earl and Elsie Conner, was born June 5, 1939 in Chariton, Iowa. He passed away July 25, 2000 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 61.

Ernest, better known as "Popeye" to his friends and family, was raised and attended school in Chariton. Following his graduation from high school, Ernie entered the military. He was trained as an aircraft repairman for the US Army. He received an honorable discharge Feb. 15, 1962.

Ernest returned to the Chariton and Osceola areas where he worked at various jobs, including construction and sales for an Osceola car dealer. Failing health required him to spend much of the time in the hospital.

He is survived by his brother, Neil and wife LaVonne Conner of Louisville, Ky., brother, Bill Conner of Arnolds Park, sister, Ruth Baker of Chariton, and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 28, at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Olson officiating. Military rites were conducted at the funeral home by the American Legion Carl L. Caviness Post 102 of Chariton. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Lowell Gullion Jr., George Coons, Jimmy Hawk, Kenny King and Melvin Richards.
