Reuben Kretchman taught German and English in "Subscription School" from 1839 to 1844. In 1845 he married Elizabeth Hostetler, daughter of Adam and Mary Hochstetler. Michael Hay, Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony. In 1853, Reuben and Elizabeth acquired a farm from Daniel Hochstetler in Elk Lick (Summit Township) where they operated a saw-mill on about 1,000 acres. Reuben also served as a school director. In 1860 he helped organize St. Paul’s and was the first Elder. Reuben was interred in the family plot with Rev. C. U. Heilman officiating. His wife Elizabeth was laid to rest beside him in 1906.
