A native of Weirsdale, Florida he graduated from Lake Weir High School, and Stetson University. He then went to New Orleans and obtained his Doctoral Medical Degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. At the University of Alabama, he obtained an Advanced Degree in Adolescent Medicine. He lived for many years in Metairie, LA where he served as a Doctor and Medical Director at Tulane University. He also managed the ambulance service for Tulane. After retiring, "Uncle Wayne" returned to Florida to be near his family that he loved so dearly.
Wayne is survived by his brother, Keith Baxley and Sister-in-Law Lou; as well as loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends that were family to him. He also leaves behind his beloved friend Leigh, and his Godsons Mike & Jay. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Eugene D. Baxley.
The Baxley family has lost a hero and a quiet champion, not to mention our immensely knowledgeable family historian. We treasure his love and his endless hours of educating us all about family history, NASA, okra, medicine, okra as medicine, New Orleans crazy life, hurricane survival, cayenne pepper, latest gadgets and sundry other subjects, but especially about the passionate, healing, relentless love of the Savior. We are glad he got to finally meet Him in person, but a little sad that we didn't get longer notice. Heaven just got sweeter, and probably a little spicier, with him there.
Gathering of family and friends at Greenwood Cemetery, Weirsdale, FL Saturday, January 28th, 11am. Arrangements under the care of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, Ocala.
