GUN BLAST VICTIM, 17, DIES HERE
A 17 year old Lincoln County boy, shot Thursday in the chest with a shotgun while seeking a drink of water, died last night in a Huntington Hospital. State police intensified their search for an elderly woman after learning of his death. Attendants at the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Hospial said Ronnie Roger Adkins, son of Mr and Mrs Abe Adkins of Midkiff, died at 5:45 p.m. Sought in the case is Mrs Rachel Workman, estimated to be more than 70 years of age. Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney R.A. Woodall said last night that murder charges will be filed. He added that the Lincoln County grand jury which meets Monday probably will hear the case.
Trooper Carl Legurski said he had "tracked" the woman for a mile through the wooded country near her home before losing the trail. Legurski and other state, town and county officers sere checking all dwellings and abandoned buildings in the area. "The suspect knows this area like the back of her hand" Lefurski said. Officers said two or three leads were being checked out last night. The area of the shooting is about 23 miles from Huntington.
As reported by the authorities, Adkins and two other youths were riding mules and a horse near the home of the woman, a widow, in a remote section of Lincoln County. Adkins companions said he told them he was going to the house to get a drink of water and find out the time. His knock on the door was answered by a 12 gauge shotgun blast through the door. The other youths said they disarmed the woman but she then ran away after one of them went for help and the other stayed with the victim.
Survivors in addition to the parents include three sisters, Shirlene, Judith and Tootise Adkins, all at home. Four brothers, Douglas, Gregory and Joe Allen, all at home, and William Adkins of Huntington, and the paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Cleve Adkins of Hamoroverton, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Palermo Methodist Church with Rev. Roy Withrow and Rev Elijah Adkins officiating. Burial will be in the Mark Adkins Cemetery. The body will be taken to the residence at 3 p.m. today.
