84 Year Old Confederate Veteran Dies
G. W. Thompson, 84 year-old Confederate veteran died Tuesday at his homestead, two miles northeast of Duncan. He had been in ill health for some time, but fought the uneven battle as he did the battles of the Civil War.
The deceased was born January 17, 1841. All of his life was spent in Arkansas and Oklahoma. On August 10, 1863 (see note below), Mr. Thompson married Miss Rose Ella Rose, who survives him. Their union is the longest lived known in Stephens county, they having lived together over sixty years. Six children were born to this couple, five of which are now living. They are Boone Thompson, of Duncan; Mrs. Doshier, of Wayne; Mrs. Johnson, of Marlow; Mrs. Harnsberger, of Marlow; and Mrs. Wininger, of Duncan. All of these were present at his death. A number of grandchildren also survive the deceased.
Mr. Thompson enlisted in the Confederate army in July, 1861. He served in Company E, of the 3rd. Arkansas cavalry, under Capt. Chrissman. He fought in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth and Missionary Ridge and distinguished himself for valor in these conflicts. Mr. Thompson was discharged at the close of the war at Chesterville, S. C. It is with regret that the people of this county note the passing of another of that ever decreasing noble band of men. They fought a losing battle, but kept on with that never-say-die spirit that has lived on through these many years.
