MATEWAN, W.Va. — Beloved educator and Matewan historian Jane R. Deaton Bowes, was born June 4, 1917, at Rose Siding, W.Va., a daughter of the late Anna Mounts and William Edward Deaton, passed from this life Mon., Oct. 6, 2014, at Williamson, W.Va., Memorial Hospital. She was 97 years old.
Those that precede Jane in death, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Earl Bowes, and brother, William Edward Deaton II
Jane was a retired educator, having worked for the Mingo County Board of Education. She was also involved with the American Red Cross during World War II, and was an active participant within the community of Matewan, and was a member of the Matewan United Methodist Church.
Jane is survived by son, Chris Bowes and his wife, Rhonda, of Matewan; daughter, Ann Halverson and her husband, Ron, of Hiddenite, N.C.; brother, Dan Deaton of Lake Kiowa, Texas; grandchildren, Jeffrey Davis, Tiffany Bowes, Roger Lee DeHart II, Jerry Michael DeHart, and Kris E. DeHart; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and she was anticipating the arrival of her seventh great-great-grandchild. Jane will be greatly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, church family, and a community of friends.
A memorial service will be held to honor Jane's life Thurs., Oct. 9, at Chambers Funeral Services Chapel at 6 p.m. with a service at 8 p.m. with Pastor Ron Accord officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Matewan United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice .
