Surrounded by his loving family, Charles Richard "Dick" Dunbar, 80, Sheridan, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016. He was born on Feb. 4, 1936, in Thorntown, Indiana, to the late John W. and Josephine A. Clouser Dunbar. He graduated from Darlington High School in 1954 and married the love of his life, Sherrell Grace Dubree, on Dec. 8, 1956.
Dick was an intelligent and hard-working man. For three years each, he worked for Alcoa Aluminum and Chrysler Corporation. He then was employed as Yardmaster for Continental Steel Corporation/Penn Dixie Steel for 25 years and retired in 1986.
Following retirement he attended ITT Technical Institute and received an HVAC certificate. He went to work for Sears Roebuck as an HVAC and appliance technician and later became self-employed. However, he was most proud of being a farmer, working his single-family farm for more than 20 years.
An astute businessman, Dick served many years as a board member and president of Kokomo Heritage Federal C.U. He was also a Ford Automotive enthusiast, avid golfer, excellent euchre player and quite mechanically inclined.
For a number of years, Dick and Sherrell were members of the Delco Dance Club. Weekends often included dining out with friends, and they also enjoyed traveling, especially cruises.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Dick loved his family. He was always willing to come to their aid, whether it meant pulling someone out of a snowdrift with his tractor, building a deck or repairing a nonworking appliance or air conditioner.
In later years, Dick became interested in his heritage. He attended several Scottish Highland Games and annual Dunbar Clan meetings. He most recently attended the Highland Games in Estes Park, Colorado, in September 2016.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Josephine A. Clouser Dunbar; his brother, John M. Dunbar; his sister, Julia A. Dunbar; and his nephew, Jack M. Dunbar.
Survivors include his wife, Sherrell G. Dunbar; his children, Charles J. Dunbar (Norma), Cynthia Jo Jordan (Kennedy) and Pamela R. Clevenger (Kevin); his grandchildren, Courtney J. Yoder (Ryan), Whitney R. Moorman (Matthew), Lynsey N. Sharp Dunlap (Adam), Samuel C. Dunbar and Grace K. Paden (Jesse); his great-grandchildren, Karsen L. and Everly R. Moorman, and Adalyn R. Yoder; and two sisters, Mary Jo Barton and Regina L. Dunbar.
Family and friends will gather from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 3155 S. 200 West (Dixon Road), Kokomo, and a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m.
Dick will be eternally laid to rest with a private burial service at Plainview Cemetery, Colfax, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or The Salvation Army. Envelopes will be available at the service.
Bussell Family Funerals, Carmel-Westfield is privileged to assist the family with arrangements.
