Benny Lee Rusk, 91, of Liberty, Texas passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at his home.
Benny was born December 8, 1925 in Nederland, Texas. He went to grade school in Pasadena, attended college at Columbia University and University of Houston. He was a veteran who served in the Army from August 1944 to July 1946. During World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was survived by his wife, Linda, of 31 years. His children: Nancy, and husband, Sonny Applebe, Benetta Rusk, Laura, and husband, Gene Schifani, Jill Rusk, and Ashlee, and husband Myles May, Sisters: Gytha McNair and Aileen Evans. Benny has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Benny is preceded in death by his parents: D. L. & Newel Rusk, brothers Cecil and Anthony Rusk, and sister, Marilyn Davis.
Benny was a retired farmer and rancher. He was former President of First State Bank in Liberty. From becoming a pilot, going on African Safari hunts to the countless hunting and fishing trips and establishing ranches across Texas, Benny lived a life full of adventure. As a boxer for the Army, he traveled to many countries, fought in Madison Square Garden, even jogged with Dean Martin and Jerry Lee Lewis while they learned to ride a horse through Central Park.
Having grown up during the Great Depression, surviving WWII, and boxing for the Army, Benny strived for success in all facets in his life. Whether it was banking, farming, ranching or flying, Benny exhibited leadership and generosity to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Through his hard work and dedication, Benny lived a life full of accomplishments and adventures. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Benny memory to the First United Methodist Church in Liberty or a charity of your choice.
Services for Benny Lee Rusk will be Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 10am at the First United Methodist Church in Liberty. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 28, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis, Liberty, TX. Condolences can be sent online to www.allisonfuneralservice.com.
