James Beckert an old soldier, was found hanging to a tree in the woods on Mrs. Smith's place on Good Hope Hill about 7:30 o'clock this morning. The body was discovered by James Hill, colored, and was cut down by Sgt McCathran and Officer A.T.Anderson. On the deceased were found were pension papers directed to him in the care of the Soldiers Home from Columbus Ohio and a discharge from the army in 1863 for injuries received at the battle of Shiloh. A bottle of whiskey was found by the tree with his coat and hat. He was fifty five years old, five feet seven in ches, gray hair and whiskers. He was a native of Germany and enlisted in company A 15th Illinois infantry in 1861. He had just been paid a $12 pension money but none was found on him.
Remains were turned over to the health officer for burial at the District expense.
