Normal Backlund, 86, died at the Elim home. Services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, with burial in Berry Cemetery. Normal and Bernice lived about a mile east of his final resting place.
Normal was born in Arthur township, Kanabec County to Ole and Alma Sundeen Backlund. He was raised on the farm, where he worked with his father and step-mother Augusta Palmer Backlund. He worked as a farm hand at age 15, moved to Princeton in 1930 to work on the Odegard potato farm. He married Bernice Green on November 7, 1942. He worked at several jobs, prior to Elk River Concrete, starting in 1950, until retirement in 1979. In 1961, the couple bought Bernice's family farm in Princeton township, where they remained until moving into town in 1997.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church, the Rum River Ramblers, and the Mille Lacs County Historical Society.
Normal is survived by his wife, three children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters.
