Frank Nordhaus Was Active Deming Merchant
Frank L. Nordhaus, in whose memory a donation of $1,000, was made by Mrs. Katherine Nordhaus, was well known in Deming as a businessman and active citizen. Mr. Nordhaus was born in Pleasanton, Tex. July 1878, and at the age of nine, moved to Deming with his parents in August of 1887. He received his early education in the public schools of Deming and was valedictorian of the first graduation class of the Deming High School. He later attended the Westworth Military Academy at Wentworth, Mo. On December 16, 1908 he married Katherine Connolly Ward. His early business ventures were in general merchandising, later he and his father founded a factory which specialized in the manufacturing of high grade saddles and harness. In addition to the business incorporated under the name of H Nordhaus & Son Co., Inc. which dissolved in July 1906. Mr. Nordhaus operated the moving picture theatre until his retirement in 1936. After his retirement, he and Mrs. Nordhaus spent most of their time collecting specimens of rocks and cactus. Their cactus garden was considered one of the most complete in the Southwest of which the City of Deming was very proud. During World War II, Mr. Nordhaus served as a member of the Luna County Selective Service Board from 1948 through most of 1944, at which time he was forced to retire due to ill health. During his lifetime, Mr. Nordhaus was an active supporter of many worthy civic enterprises to Deming was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and in religious life who an active member of the Methodist Church.
