In "Bender-Bainter-Painter Smith and the Allied Families of Phillipson-Marino-Alioto" by Joseph Linn Marino, it is stated that Henry Painter was born Johann Heinrich Bender and that he joined the German Regiment at age 17. However, the pension application of one Henry Painter in Nelson County Virginia makes it abundantly clear that he was the Henry Bender who served in the German Battalion under Colonel Weltner. The plaque, it seems, was placed in error. The only proof we have of his service in the Revolutionary War is by bios written about his children and grandchildren stating that their ancestor Henry Painter was a soldier in the War of Revolution. As of 2016, DNA testing seems to have proven he was not the son of Johann Georg Bender from Mount Joy Township, Lancaster, PA. Research on this is still pending.
