Mrs. Mary Howerton, 78, Greenville Township, Floyd County, injured fatally Saturday in Clark County, Indiana, was the fifth member of her family killed in traffic accidents. State police said she was struck by a car driven by Carl J. Jackson, 34, Borden Route 2, a quarter of a mile east of Borden on State Road 60. Jackson told police he was blinded by an approaching automobile when his car struck the woman walking in the middle of the road. The driver was not held. Relatives said yesterday the aged woman, who had suffered a stroke, was in the habit of wandering away from home. She walked at least five miles from her residence near Greenville Saturday night. Her husband, Homer Howerton; a son, Aubrey; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Howerton, and the latter's 6-year-old son, were killed October 14, 1950, on U. S. 150, near New Albany, in a truck-automobile accident. The four victims were riding in the automobile.
