Shreveport, LA - Memorial services for Betty Basinger Frierson will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 900 Jordan Street, Shreveport, LA, on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11:00 AM.
Mrs. Frierson was born on May 30, 1925 in Mobile, AL, and passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Clarence Nicholson Frierson; her parents, Helen Bolinger Basinger and Dr. Roswell Christian Basinger; her maternal grandparents, Dora Maddux Bolinger and John Corbin Bolinger; and her paternal grandparents, Elizabeth Amstutz Basinger and Levi Basinger.
She is survived by her sister, Jean Basinger Allen, and her four sons: G. Archer Frierson II and wife Ivy, John B. Frierson and wife Christy, Clarence N. Frierson, Jr. (Tannie) and wife Jennifer, and Christian B. Frierson and wife Paula. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren: Archer III and wife Tricia, Bratton and wife Caroline, Marion and husband Ben Kacos, Elizabeth and husband Owen Buhler, Allen, Trenton and wife Aimee, John Jr., Jenni, Mary Helen, Will and wife Kylie, Thomas, Timothy, Matthew, Caroline, Christian, and Katie; and eight great-grandchildren: Ivy, Claire, Davis, Emma Gayle, Spencer, Lillie, Audrey, and Bahan, and numerous beloved cousins.
Betty grew up in the midst of a loving family and spent many happy times with her sister Jean, her cousins Janet and Susan, and many dear childhood friends in both Shreveport and Mobile. She was educated at South Highlands Elementary and Byrd High School, and graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College in 1946. Betty and Clarence were married on December 30, 1948, and they lived their lives together raising their four sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their home, Frierson Plantation, known to her family as "The Place".
Betty's life was centered on love for her husband and family, her church, her friends, and the good life provided by her Lord. Her days were many and good. She enjoyed opening her home to her sons' friends as they were growing up and cooking plenty of "hotcakes" and "plain cakes" on Saturdays for hungry boys. She enjoyed watching her sons' and grandchildren's numerous activities, shepherding and sheltering countless dogs and cats, tending her flower and vegetable gardens, and for years, growing multi-colored zinnias, which she shared abundantly with both friends and strangers. Traveling was a lifelong interest shared by Betty and Clarence, both at home and abroad, but no travels surpassed "car trips" with their four boys, particularly to the Rocky and Smokey Mountains.
For over sixty years, Betty was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, women's "circle" member, and Deacon, and where she was recently awarded a Life Membership by the Presbyterian Women. She enjoyed volunteering at her sons' schools, her long time service in the Junior League, and particularly her beloved "Sewing Bee", where she was nourished by abiding friendships with several lifelong friends. Throughout her life, Betty loved many and was loved by many.
Affectionately known to her family as "Bopper", Betty led a joyful life, blessed with a loving husband and family. She was always thankful for the gift of faith in Jesus Christ and the peace and comfort found in the strong belief that in life and death we all belong to God. She was truly a child of God.
The family offers grateful thanks to Betty's caregivers of the past few years, especially her doctors, particularly Dr. Dan Moller, the staff and nurses at The Glen, and her faithful sitters, for their love and devotion. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport or such other institutions or causes that are dedicated to God's good and loving purposes.
