Henry Mathews was one of three children. He was born August 13, 1847, at Liverpool, Lancashire, England. He came to America with his parents, John Mathews and Mary Jane Doyle Mathews, his older sister Jane and younger brother John. Henry was 16 years old at this time. They landed in America in 1863, aboard the "Anartic" from Liverpool, England. From New York, the Mathews family came across the plains to Salt Lake City, Utah.
In England John had been a painter and so in America he and his son Henry again took up the trade of painting. Henry helped paint and re-decorate the scenery and interior of the Old Salt Lake Theater. His work was exceptionally good. He worked for perfection.
While in Salt Lake City Henery met Marie Steine Rolfsen. They were married May 30, 1869.
