Maria was born at Riesor, Norway. Her mother and birth father, Christian Steine, were never married. She was raised by Anders Rolfsen. Her home was on the ocean shore, a very pretty place, with rolling hills and beautiful wild flowers and fruits. Many of the inhabitants of the city were fishermen and sailors. Her father, being a sailor, took her far out to sea many times.

Missionaries from the Latter-day Saint Church taught the family the Gospel. They were baptized, Maria, her sisters and brothers, her mother, and grandmother. They left Riesor on April 1, 1863 immigrating to Utah. They sailed to New York and then rode in boxcars meant for livestock to Florence, Nebraska. This was during the Civil War. They could hear the roar of cannon from the Fortress at Vicksburg. They went on to Salt Lake by wagon train arriving September 23, 1863.

At the age of sixteen, on May 30, 1869, Maria married Henry Mathews in Salt Lake City in the Endowment House. Maria and Henry spent their adult lives working and serving in the Church and raising their family of twelve children. Henry died in 1907.
