1905 Obituary lists this Civil War vet as being buried at Rock Creek Cemetery.
Also see 1864 Civil War Enlistment record page 189,listing Edward J. Dowling as a clerk age 23 born Auburn NY ,Enlisting Feb 12th 1864 at what looks like a Brandy Street Va. [?] location.
While linking his wife which I found at Cedar Hill, I discovered someone has listed a similarly named, or matching Edward Dowling marker at Arlington Cemetery.
There can be several people with matching names or profiles with it being so large.I have a good amount of experience there but Arlington has recently taken their ANC Website down and apparently privatizing it ? So I will look further. I have found a pension record and his unit but haven't found the control form or an order for his Cemetery marker with a matching 1905 date yet. Sometimes with DC area vets a late change reburial or switch to Arlington has often happened. myta who created the original entry at Arlington is experienced but the work done up until then did not confirm his wife, which I located at Cedar Hill... they married on February 19th 1871 in Alexandria Va.
Lists his parents as John & Ellen Dowling. Also see a Peter and Kate Dowling of Auburn NY that could be his brother ? they had a service member Edward J. Dowling 1873 - 1953 with a military marker & record in Auburn... Marriage record lists birth as 1846 Auburn N.Y. but 1880 census lists 1844 Ireland. Claiming to be younger and not Irish in 1871 is understandable though !, so the Ireland 1844 might be right. My biggest problem so far is not finding a control form for a 1905 burial at Arlington. Found a few Edward J Dowling's but no 1905, and photo from Arlington doesn't show his State of unit either.

Early pension record from 1865 listing him as injured in some way it would seem. His wife Clara L. Anderson is listed as receiving it beyond 1905. Child listed in interment records at Holy Rood. Son shown for 1885 is Wilfrid in a Military training school at around age 16 in 1900 census also see a NY/WWI registration record with what seems to have his mothers name on it. WWII record says 1-20-91 instead of 1-20-1885 however. Death certificate says '91 but 1885 is more correct.
