Mrs. Catherine L. Zane, matriarch of Humboldt County education, died at her Elk River ranch hone at 7:30 a.m. today. One of the most honored persons in the teaching profession, she was 93 years of age.

The esteem in which she was held and the gratitude of many thousands of her former students was made permanently evident on her 92 birthday when the new Catherine L. Zane Junior High School was named for her in public ceremonies.

The beloved teacher and administrator had been hospitalized several times in recent months, but was still keenly alert up until the time of her death.

She had been, during her career, a teacher in rural schools and vice-principal and administrator of both the historic Winship School and the Eureka Junior High School.

In 1937 she was awarded the first Honorary Degree ever bestowed by Humboldt State College - that of Bachelor of Education.

Mrs. Zane was born Catherine Lessard in San Mateo on September 21, 1872, when the community was known as Spanish Town, coming to Humboldt County with her parents at the age of two years. The trip was made aboard the steamer "Pelican."

In 1877 the family moved to Arcata where they lived until 1882, later returning to this city.

Birth and Death

In January, 1900, she married J. Franklin Zane, living there until 1905 at the Zane Ranch where her son was born in 1903, and where death came to her this morning.

Mrs. Zane entered San Jose Normal School (now San Jose State) at the age of 16 after graduating from th 10th grade here and the private Phelps Seminary. She graduated from San Jose with the class of 1892. Her first school was at Elk River, where she taught from 1892 to 1897, when she was elected by the Board of Education to teach the Fifth Grade at the Pioneer School, located at Third and G Streets where the City Hall was later built.

A year later she was given the Sixth Grade at Winship, then housing the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grades on the lower floors and the High School on the top floor. She taught there until she "retired" to be married in 1900.

When he husband died in 1914 she returned to teaching in Eureka, starting at the Jefferson School when she remained until 1915, when she was given the Winship assignment. In 1926 she took over as head of the then-new Eureka Junior High School. She held that position until reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65 in June of 1937.

Still Active

But she did not retire.

The still highly active Catherine Zane then obtained a salesman's license in Real Estate and worked for a time at the Guthrie-Georgeson Agency here. In 1940 she passed the Broker's examination, operating her own business alone for three years.

When her son returned to Eureka in late 1943 they formed a business partnership, the Zane Realty Company, which still exists.

In addition to Simm Zane, is survived by a brother, John E. Lessard of Palo Alto, a granddaughter, Mrs. Suzanne Zane Pal and [great] grandson Jeffrey Pal, both of Malibu Beach, several nieces and nephews and other more remote descendants.

Funeral arrangements for the most revered teacher in county history are pending at Pierce Mortuary here.
