Orbie was born in Chriesman, Texas, on October 17, 1929, to Allen Jackson Hairston and Nora Alley (Price) Hairston. He joined the U.S. Army in December 1948, was an Army tank man, learning to work on the tanks, and became a Sergeant. He retired 21 years later in August 1969. He tried retirement for five years. In 1974, he returned to Texas from Fort Knox, Kentucky, and he went back to work in Civil Service at Fort Hood in heavy mobile maintenance repair for 20 years, and retired once again.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Belton and a member of the Temple V.F.W. Post #133. On June 14, 1952, he and Jo Ella Magee were married in the First Christian Church in Rockdale. Together they raised their two daughters. He enjoyed his family and friends, sharing his life stories and working with his chickens and peacocks. He loved working on cars, tractors and big equipment.
He passed away Friday, November 18, 2016, at his home in Temple. He is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Jessie, Loye Lee, Charles Ray, A.B., Jerry and Ronnie Wayne Hairston and two sisters, Mae Johnson and Martha Grauvender.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, two daughters, two grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
