She was the daughter of Bert and Effie Barnett. She grew up in the rural Bear Creek neighborhood. She attended grade school at the Bear Creek School and high school in Earlham, where she graduated in 1930. Maudie , as she was usually called, attended a year of junior college in Earlham, taught country school near St. Charles, and then worked as a housekeeper in Des Moines for a short time. In 1940 she married Russell Applegate, also of the Bear Creek Community. They lived and farmed in the community all the years of their married life and remained on the farm during their years of retirement. Two children: Don and Jean, were born into the family.
Maudie was a life-long member of the Bear Creek Friends Church, and had a clear profession of her faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, and especially liked the hymn "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". She was a good cook, a helpful and supportive farm wife, and a caring mother.
Maudie was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers Willard and Clyde Barnett, and her husband. She leaves to remember her life: her son and daughter-in-law Don and Deloris Applegate of Earlham, Iowa; her daughter and son-in-law Jean and Walt Gilbert of Earlham, Iowa; 3 grandchildren; Daniel Applegate, Zachary and Elizabeth Gilbert; several nephews, nieces and cousins and many friends.
