SP4 Wilbert Ray Barbee was a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Barbee served our country until March 15th, 1968 in Dinh Tuong, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Wilbert died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a landmine. His body was recovered. SP4 Barbee is on panel 44E, line 057 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.
The funeral for Specialist Four Wilbert Ray Barbee, of Route 1, Kenly, is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock in Kenly Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Reverend W.M. Watkins and the Reverend J.B. Edwards officiating, and the internment following in Kenly Cemetery with full Military Honors. The soldier was killed in combat in Vietnam on Friday, March 15. He was 19 years of age. Before joining the US Army, Barbee attended High School in Kenly. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Lester Barbee of Route 1, Kenly. Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandmother, Mrs Polly Bass; two brothers, Douglas Barbee of Wilson and Woodrow Barbee of Kenly; and one sister, Mrs A.B. Aycock of Black Creek.
He was the son of Lester Ernest & Lola Mae Bass Barbee, Route #1, Kenly, NC.
He served with Alpha Company, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, "Old Reliables", USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
