He was the youngest of fifteen children, raised on a farm in Hancock County, Tennesee, along the Clinch River. He served in the Revolutionary War. He married Nancy Baldwin, and then they lived on his father's farm. They had several children. He died at the age of 104. Many of his descendants lived long lives too.

Their son John was the first member of the family to migrate to Kentucky.

He was buried along Little Caney Creek.
