Rev. Richard Byrd is the son of John Byrd 1717–1808) and Sarah Jones (1729–1810).

He was a soldier in colonial Virginia, appearing on the militia list at Glade Hollow Fort in Fincastle County (present-day Scott County). He fought in Dunsmore's War under Captain Daniel Smith and Lt. William Edmondson, and was also present at the Battle of Point Pleasant in October, 1774.

About 1774, Rev. Byrd married Elizabeth Woods Buster in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia Colony. They had these (probable) children:

– Jane "Jean" Byrd (1780–1831)
