Sam G.Angelos, 89, of Salem Oregon passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. He resided at Capital Manor and was cared for by the wonderful Manor Caregivers, Willamette Valley Hospice, close friends and his family.
Sam was born on Mother's Day, May 12, 1927 to George and Elise (Waterman) Angelos in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the first child born in the family followed by his brother, Gus and his sister, Margaret.
After Sam graduated from high school he joined the World War II effort. He first joined the Merchant Marines and then enlisted in the Army. Sam served in the Military Police as part of the occupational forces where he was in charge of protecting the Emperor of Japan's family. After finishing his military service Sam returned home where he worked with his Dad who owned a cafe and did other jobs.
On April 23, 1950, Sam married Joy L. Carlson who was the love of his life. After marrying, Sam and Joy moved to Salem Oregon where Sam worked building the Detroit Dam. The couple moved back to Salt Lake city, Utah in 1953 and Sam started working for Brunswick Drug Company. He became their regional representative and moved to Idaho Falls, ID. In 1964, the family moved to Salem Oregon and opened the American Family Steakhouse restaurant. In 1974, Sam began working for the State of Oregon in the Worker's Compensation Program. When Sam retired from this work, he and Joy became the proprietors of the Wolf Creek Tavern in southern Oregon. Throughout all these years Sam and Joy formed many friendships which endured a lifetime. Sam and Joy were married 56 years before Joy passed. They had 2 children, Sam G Angelos, Jr. and Deborah J Angelos.
Sam was preceded in death by Joy and his brother Gus. Surviving members of his family include Sam's sister Margaret (Bob) Forsgren, sister-law Pearl (Gus) Angelos, son, Sam (Rebecca) Angelos Jr.; daughter Deborah (Milton) Ray, 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Sam will be remembered for his many years of service in the community with the South Salem Lion's Club where he generously gave of his time and energy. He was also a Salem Heights Board member, a Board member of the Oregon Sight and Hearing Foundation, and was a member of the Salem Thorsmen Choir. Sam was a loving husband and father. He was a true and loyal friend, a good listener and confidant, and a patient man who always looked for the good in others. He will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be on Tuesday, August 30th at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Salem Oregon at 1:00 pm Arrangements by City View Funeral Home. Published in the Salem, Oregon StatesmanJournal Aug. 28,2016.
