Gus Angelos 1929 ~ 2016

I am intrigued by obituaries written by the deceased so I thought I would give it a try and see how it goes.

I was born in SLC Utah on Oct 3rd 1929, the month the Great Depression started. I was the middle child with an older brother, Sam and a younger sister, Margaret. My Father was born in Greece, and my Mother was born in Germany. We grew up in a good safe neighborhood with lots of boys. For the first 16 years of my life, the Depression and World War II were on. No one had many material things. You wore your brother's clothes till everything was worn out. We invented games and used whatever we could find to play. I never had an allowance and we all looked for some kind of a job to make some money. I had a very happy childhood.

I graduated from South High in 1947 and was a good athlete playing football and playing on the 1946 State Championship baseball team. After graduation, I was offered a professional contract to play baseball for a farm team of St. Louis Cardinals or Brooklyn Dodgers. Since I was 17, my Mom had to sign for me with St. Louis and I played my first profession minor league baseball game at age 17 ... $150.00 a month and I was one happy guy. In high school, I met a cute girl named Pearl Trauffer who I married 7 years later in the Salt Lake Temple.

We have 4 children: Mark (Caryl Bowen), Sue (Mark Young), Scott (Shelly Peterson), Craig (Kristin Madsen),19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren The happiest thing in my life is that every single one of our offspring are doing very well. They have married well, are highly educated, and doing worthwhile things. We have been extremely blessed.

I have had more than my share of adventures. Baseball opened the door for me to get a free education and a chance travel. I have had my share of degrees, honors, positions, publicity, and most all the good things there are to enjoy on this earth. I was proud to serve 9 years in the US Army including 5 years on active duty as a Dental Officer. I rose to the rank of Major. I was also very fortunate to practice Orthodontics which gave me a great deal of satisfaction and happiness. I leave this mortal existence thinking there is another great adventure waiting me as I pass from mortality to immortality. I love the Lord, my family, and this Country.

Incidentally, I died from a rare heart disease named Amyloidosis, at age 86, a happy man.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Quality Hospice, especially Chelsea, Charlotte, and McKenzie. Funeral services will be held at the Olympus Hills Ward, 4176 Adonis Dr., SLC, UT at 11:00 on Saturday Feb 13,2016. Viewing will be Friday 6-8pm and Saturday 9:30-10:30 at the same address. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the LDS Perpetual Fund
