Lawrence Wilson Wardell was born October 1, 1928 in Salt Lake City. He was the third born child of Isaac Martin Wardell and Eva Wilson Owens. There would eventually be thirteen children — six biological and seven half-brothers and half-sisters from his father’s previous marriage. Life was hard during those years with his father working as a carpenter to support fifteen people.

On March 23, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Jean Heaton, in Salt Lake City and on August 31, 1952, they were blessed with a son, Randy who gave them four wonderful grandsons. Lawrence and Marilyn were married nearly forty years before Marilyn passed away on February 1, 1991 from cancer. In 1996, he was blessed to be introduced to Chadette DeNiro and on August 2, 1996 they were married. They enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the world and also in their motor home.

Larry was an exceptional carpenter, having learned from his craft from his father. He also was an exceptional inventor, always looking for a better way to do something. Often times, he would see something that he invented on the market by someone else. His dream was to personally be successful in bringing one of his inventions to market.

Lawrence loved the outdoors and especially loved fishing in Daniels, Big Piney and Pinedale Wyoming on the Green and New Fork rivers. Larry lived his whole life in Salt Lake City, working various jobs, the longest of which was for International Harvester before deciding to do carpentry work full time in 1972. He worked until 1991, retiring when Marilyn passed away.

Anyone who knew Larry knew how generous he was with his time and talents. He was always willing to give service if anyone needed help and could often be found helping his neighbors or family with some project. Larry was a true gentleman, kind, considerate, and loving. He never wanted anyone to fuss over him and he never wanted to be a burden. Even during the difficult times, he still maintained his sense of humor and would always manage to have a smile on his face.

As someone who has been active his whole life, the last few years have been very difficult for Larry. Two years ago, he suffered a broken back from a fall off of a ladder and within the last two years or so, multiple surgeries and radiation for melanoma, which has caused him much pain and suffering. In June, Larry had a body scan that showed that he was cancer free; however on Friday, October 28, he was taken to emergency with back pain. During the MRIs and CAT scans, it was discovered that he had metastatic cancer throughout his body. This was devastating news, especially after all Larry had gone through to fight the cancer. He died only three days later on November 1, 2016.

Larry is survived by his wife, Chadette; Chadette’s children, and son Randy (Robyn). He also has six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his half-brother, Elmer.

We would like to thank the staff on the third floor west wing of St. Mark's Hospital for their care and kindness; also, the staff, especially Dean, at Holladay Care Center for their kindness and care.
