"Wilberta 'Bertie' E. Brakenhoff, age 88, of Fremont, passed away Friday, November 4, 2016, at Nye Legacy.

Wilberta, “Bertie” Brakenhoff. Mother, sister, aunt and friend, she touched more people in her life then her daughters ever imagined.

Born September 1, 1928 in Concordia Missouri to Theodore and Flora (Barfrade) Heins, she grew up on the family farm near Concordia Missouri. Bertie was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in 1942. She graduated from Concordia High School in 1946. She then started working as a secretary at St. Paul’s High School and later at St. Paul’s College in Concordia.

Bertie married Loren D. Brakenhoff on February 16th in 1952. They later divorced. She was a personal secretary to the Personnel Director at Campbell Soup Company. We all remember fondly the Campbell Soup memorabilia she treasured and now her children do. When the plant closed she started working at Bryd Engineering as the manager’s secretary.

The last years of her life brought new challenges which she met with her typical infectious smile and “can do” attitude. Her scope of friends expanded to include the workers and fellow residents. She enjoyed an in-depth Bible study and Sunday services at both her home church of Trinity Lutheran and also each week at Nye Legacy. Her faith kept her strong, grounded and content through her entire life and she shared that faith with all around her be they family or friends.

Bertie was in the forefront of women in business. She was an integral part of Business and Professional Women serving as secretary and president. She was also very active in LWML, a number of years as president. She used her blend of business acumen and her faith based life serving her church and community. Mary Martha, Circle and Sunday school teacher were also ways she served the church along with many boards and committees throughout the years. Family, church and work, she got it all done and was happy doing it.

Bertie gave her daughters many gifts. The love of cooking and baking and making sure every guest had a favorite dish to sample on every holiday. She loved to try new recipes and shared those recipes in many cookbooks.

Her garden was a joy for her. She would spend hours getting every weed from one area and then move on to the next. She always had blossoms to share with others and she cut clips off of any plant if someone wanted to give that plant a start.

Bertie also shared her love of music to her daughters and son-in-law. She sang Silent Night (Stille Nacht), in German on a number of Christmas Eve candlelight services. Pastor Heuer also requested that she sing I Will Love You Forever on a Mother’s Day Sunday.

She loved her 5 grand dogs and enjoyed spoiling them.

Two weeks ago she shared a meal with her brother, his wife and niece and nephew -in -law. This last week she had a smile for all visitors and workers, even when she could no longer speak.

Our mother, sister, aunt and friend brought joy and love all around her, and she will be missed. We will see you again Mom. We love you, Linda, Donna and Steve.

Memorials may be directed to K-9 Ministries or The Trinity Lutheran Organ Fund.
