Joseph L. Andrus, a farmer living near the Greenwood school, about 8 miles southeast of Doniphan was killed Monday afternoon when he fell from a tree which he climbed to cut away some limbs so he could see over his farm from his house.

He had been to Doniphan that morning and after he returned home, and at about 4:00 o'clock, he told his wife he was going to cut the under limbs off the tree in front of the house. He climbed the tree, up about 20 feet from the ground and had cut one or two limbs when he fell out striking the ground on his head. He lived about 15 minutes only.

His son, Carl, a boy of 14 years was out under the tree trimming up the limbs that were cut off but he did not see his father fall. It is not known how the man came to fall.

Mr. Andrus came to this county about 9 years ago from Kentucky. He was 66 years old and is the father of 7 sons and 5 daughters. Only the three younger of the sons were at home at the death of their father. His wife survives him. The funeral was held yesterday at New Hope church in Harris Township.

My husband and I have been to New Hope but could not find any stone or marker for Joseph Lee Andrus, but my cousin Mary Ruth (Towell) Schroeder told me her mother, Ann (Colley) Towell, daughter of Carl Errette B. Colley & Ida Pearl Andrus [d/o Joseph Lee Andrus], said she knows her grandfather Joseph Lee Andrus was buried at New Hope.
Maybe one of these days a marker or stone will be installed for Joseph.
