Dr. John Pope DuVal Jr. (UPenn M.D. 1846), second son of Gen. John Pope (1790-1854) and Ann Fouchee Tebbs DuVal (1791-1868), was born on December 14, 1822, in Dumfries, Va. He lived in Tallahassee and was a surgeon in the Confederate Army. He married in 1855, Mary S. “Polly” Fisher (1831-1903), of Tallahassee. Their children were Anna S. (c1858-), and John Pope Duval III (1864-) who married in 1886, his cousin, Maude Fisher (1863-1936), in Thomas County, Ga. (or Madison County, Fla.). Their sons were John Pope, IV (1887-1939) and Hugh Fisher Duval (1895-1919).

Dr. John Pope Duval Jr. died in 1866, perhaps in Tallahassee.

Colonel Nathaniel Pope, c1610-1660, of Virginia, Ancestor of Washington, Governors and Legislators, History of His Descendants (Louisville, Ky. 2018), 55.

Dr. John Pope DuVal II, born in Dumfries, Virginia in 3/1822 [12/14/1822], baptized in Dumfries, Virginia 2/21/1824. He was in the University of Virginia Class of 1839 - 1840 where he studied medicine, but it does not appear that he earned a degree from the University. He returned to Florida and by the mid-1840s he was practicing as a physician and attorney in Tallahassee. He continued practicing medicine and law in Tallahassee in the 1850s. On 2/15/1855 John married Mary S. “Polly” Fisher at the residence of Capt. William Fisher in Wakulla County, Florida. It appears that during the 1850s John served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army and in 3/1859 he was commissioned as surgeon at the Marine Hospital in St. Mark’s Florida. At the start of the Civil War John volunteered for service in the Confederate forces. On October 13, 1861 he was commissioned by Gov. John Milton as Assistant Surgeon for the districts of St. Marks and Suwannee. It is not clear that John ever saw service action outside of Florida, but some sources list him as a surgeon in the Army of Tennessee (CSA) from 4/18/1862 until his resignation at Tallahassee 12/31/1862. John returned to Tallahassee to continue his medical and law practices, where he died in 1866. It is believed John is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida although no stone exists (note: the Mary S. DuVal (born 11/28/1833 - died 8/28/1903) buried with Gen. John Pope DuVal, father of John P. DuVal II in the Old City Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida is likely "Polly" Fisher).
