The youngest child of Charles A. and Bernice Bates, Bernice graduated from Anacortes High School in 1966. On June 11, 1966 she married Charles E. Mullin in Anacortes. On March 1, 1974 she married William E. Bainbridge, Jr. in Coupeville. She worked in the Island County Treasurer's office for 28 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Earl, Carl and Kenny. She was survived by her husband, Bill, of Coupeville; her son, Roger of Coupeville; her daughter, Mrs. Craig (Sandy) Timms of Tennessee; her sister, Mrs. Chuck (Phyllis) Moore of Anacortes; and her brother Chuck of Arizona.
