Carl Loren Bates, 56, of Memphis, formerly of Washington state, pipe fitter and welder, died Wednesday at Baptist Memorial Hospital East after a stroke. Bartlett Funeral Home Family Heritage Chapel has charge.

Mr. Bates, the husband of Virginia Bates, also leaves a daughter, Denise Starkey of Baytown, Texas; three sons, Carl W. Bates, Gene Weeks and Joe Weeks, and two sisters, Phyllis Moore and Bernice Bainbridge, all of Washington; a brother, Chuck Bates of Arizona, and eight grandchildren.
