According to Ruth Godwin Gadbury in her book, Godwin-Hill and Related Families, "Enoch and Jane Smith lived near Spartanburg in South Carolina before coming to Alabama about 1840, first to Randolph County before settling in Calhoun County in the beautiful Chocoloca Valley about 3 Miles west of Jacksonvile, Alabama, an area surrounded by wooded hills. Two children were born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, one in Randolph County and the other six in Calhoun County. They made the long move to northeast Texas in the fall of 1870 when Enoch was 64 and their youngest daughter 15.
Land records in Calhoun County Alabama show that Enoch and Jane sold 1/4 section of land in the Coosa Land District in September of 1869 for $600.... Jane made her mark. Jane and Enoch died a little over four months apart... All of their boys fought in the Confederate Army, one of them losing his life in the service."
Enoch's parents are believed to be James and Elizabeth Newton Smith, born in Virginia and died in Union County, South Carolina.
