According to Ruth Godwin Gadbury, GODWIN-HILL AND RELATED FAMILIES, 1980:
"Uncle Newt" was a farmer, moved to Lockney, Texas when he could no longer farm. Both he and Amanda were devout Baptist; he led the singing in church and his daughter Lois played the organ.

A granddaughter, Irene Foster, remembers the Smith family get-togethers when they would sing. One of the fondest memories was of her grandfather sitting on the front porch, singing "Amazing Grace."

Newton had come with his family from Calhoun Co., Ala. to Hopkins Co., Tex. in 1870, but he soon came to Mills Co. where he met and married Amanda Godwin. They moved to Bonita in Montague Co. in 1897 then on to Hale Co. in the Panhandle in 1919, shipping their belongings by freight. Eva's husband had died during the flu epidemic of 1878, so she and her two children moved with them. Roy's family, Cager, and Maude went, too, occupying one whole car of a slow-moving passenger train. They settled in Hale and Floyd Counties.

Newt served for the Confederacy in Alabama. He enlisted as a private at the age of 18 in Company F, 58th Infantry Regiment Alabama on 15 Apr 1863. Somehow he survived the war and had 12 children.

Marshall H. Smith (18 Dec 1874 - 03 Feb 1884)
