William V. Burnside

William "Bill" V. Burnside, 91, of Beverly Hills, Florida, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016, following complications from a stroke two weeks earlier.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley May; two children, Sharon Wallhead of Grafton, Ohio, and William "Vincent" Burnside, II and wife, Barbara, of North Andover, MA; his sister-in-law, Joan Burnside of Cleveland, Ohio; as well as two grandchildren, Elizabeth Yackel and husband, Mark, of Bristow, VA, and Allison Verbanic and husband, Greg, of Virginia Beach, VA; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Marfork, WV, he was the son of the late Theodore Jackson and Eva (Ballard) Burnside and had five siblings.

A proud World War II veteran, he served as a radio operator in the U.S. Navy, attached to the U.S. Marine Corps, and he participated in seven invasions in the Pacific. Bill retired from Alcoa, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio, after working 33 years as an electrician.

Bill was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Hernando, FL, where he liked to listen to his wife sing in the choir. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing Sudoku, was a diehard New York Yankees fan and enjoyed reading his newspapers.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Maxine Bradford, Robert Burnside, Geraldine Staggers, Eileen Martin, and Donald Burnside.

Services will be held at 1 pm on Monday, October 31, 2016 at Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home, 3075 S. Florida Ave, Inverness, FL. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at noon until the service begins. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Florida National Cemetery, which is reserved for veterans in recognition of their service to our country. The cemetery is located in Bushnell, FL.
