Daughter of John and Levisa Spratt Stafford, and wife of Uriah Elkins. Martha Cosby probably moved from Gilbert to the town of Christian when she got married in 1866. The family was in Christian on the 1870 Logan County WV census.

My Grandpa Stafford had her listed as his Aunt Cosby Stafford Elkins on his family tree (her middle name).

When Martha Cosby married Uriah Elkins in 1866, he was a widower with 5 young girls, ages 4 to 13. One of those daughters, Zilphia, is quoted in the 2nd Gilbert book as saying that her stepmother was very good to them and she made no difference in her own children and them. I appreciate that she said that. Since we know so little about Martha Cosby, I'm glad that one of the few things we know is something really nice.

Besides those five girls and six of her own children, Martha took three little grandsons to raise when their mother died within a month after childbirth, the sons of James and Lydia Elkins Buchanan.

Children of Martha Cosby and Uriah Elkins were:
Cyrus, Mary (married Andrew Beckett White), Uriah Burbidge "Burb", John, Helen (married Francis McClellan "Mack" Ballard), and Rush.
