He was the husband of Joan (Kosik) Durfee, who died in 1982, and a son of the late William C. and Dorothy L. (Carr) Durfee. He received his early education in St. Johnsbury, Vt..

He worked at the Corrugated Box Co. in Lowell before enlisting in the Navy in 1944. He served in USNAAB, Plymouth and the USNAAB Vicarage and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the American Area Medal.

Following his honorable discharge in March 1946, he returned to Lowell and became employed with the Hoisting and Portable Engineers, Union Local 4. He worked on many construction jobs throughout New England, including Boston Prudential and Hancock buildings, and the nuclear power plant in Seabrook, N.H., in before retiring in 1988.

In his younger years, he was a member of the Killwing Lodge A.F.& A.M., and belonged to the Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Michael Pinette; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sandra Durfee; five sisters, Madeline Lesniak, Martha Bassette, Shirley Kitchen, Helen Wilson and her husband James, and Diane Durfee; two brothers, Allen Durfee and his wife Dorothy, James Durfee and his wife Carol; two granddaughters, Susan and her husband, Alfred LaBonte, and Michelle Pinette; four grandsons, Patrick Durfee, Jonathan Pinette and his wife Sandra, Jason Pinette, and Jamison Pinette; four great-grandchildren, Meranda LaBonte, Jared LaBonte, Nicholas Durfee and Katlyn Durfee.
