James Abshire was the son of Revolutionary War veteran, Abraham Abshire. He married Elizabeth Overholtz, daughter of Abraham Overholtz and Anna Whitmore, on March 6, 1804, in Franklin County, Virginia. They had seven known children: Nancy, Mary, Chloe, Isaac, Abner, Elizabeth, and James.
