William was the son of Caleb Dean and Jemima Indsley.
He married in 1842, Pennsylvania, to Mary Ann Hamilton.
They had 7 girls and 1 boy.
They were living in Center Township, Henry County, Iowa, at the time of the 1860 census.
His brother, Henry Clay Dean, was a famous minister, orator, and lawyer who was especially known for his opposition to the Civil War.

Dean-On Wednesday, the 24th inst., Wm. Dean, at the house of James Shepherd Esq.., in Keosauqua, Iowa.
He went to bed in his usual health, which had been rather poor for some time past. He was born in McClellandtown, Fayette county, was when he died near 46 years of age. He lived and was extensively engaged in business for a number of years in Greene county, and removed to Henry county, Iowa. He leaves a large family. He was a brother of Hon. Henry Clay Dean.
