JEREMIAH CHAPLINE was born on June 24, 1756, in All Saints' Parish, Frederick County; fourth and youngest son of Joseph Chapline, Sr. and Ruhama Williams Chapline. Jeremiah was twelve years old when his father died. In his last will and testament Joseph Chapline, Sr. left his son Jeremiah the "Plantation where I now dwell" which included several hundred acres and a two story log house.
Jeremiah and his older brothers, Joseph Jr. and James, all enrolled in the first militia company organized for the Revolutionary War in Elizabeth Town District of Frederick County, Maryland (now the Hagerstown area of Washington County) on January 6, 1776. They took the oath of Allegiance in Sharpsburg Hundred before March 2, 1778.
On March 20, 1787 Jeremiah married Elizabeth Nourse (1765-1846). Jeremiah and Elizabeth had six daughters and two sons. Their children were:
Sarah F. Chapline Evans (1790-1862)
Catherine B. Chapline Price (1792-1860)
Joseph Chapline (1794-1815)
James Nourse Chapline (1796-1830)
Elizabeth H. Chapline Sisson (1798-1864)
Susan Chapline Wilson (1800-1824)
Mary Ann Chapline Roach (1802-1833)
Ruhama Chapline Cravens (1805-1882)
Jeremiah died in March 1809 at age 52 leaving his widow with seven children still at home between the ages of 4 and 17. Jeremiah was originally buried in the family grave yard on the family farm located two miles west of Sharpsburg. Elizabeth was unable to find his will and the property was divided under the direction of the Washington County Commission and sold in 1818. Many years later Jeremiah's will was found hidden in the fireplace mantle after the house had burned.
