Thomas enlisted in 4th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry in Wrightsville (Johnson County) on Sept. 20, 1863, but was transferred to 12th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery on Nov. 1, 1863. This is the same regiment that his younger brother William was in.

He was wounded at Monocacy Junction on Jul. 9, 1864 and captured the following day. He died at the prison hospital in Frederick, Maryland on Jul. 28th from the gunshot wound that had penetrated his lung (one page of his record gives the date of death as Jul. 29th, but another states he died on the 28th and was buried on the 29th). Thomas is buried in grave #268 or #272, depending on the record.

Thomas was the second child and oldest son of Daniel Heath and his first wife, name unknown. He married Elizabeth Tison in about 1845, probably in either Washington or Emanuel County.12th Georgia CSA
