G. J. BITTNER DIES SUNDAY

Grover J. Bittner, 79, for many years prominent in Bellevue business and civic affairs, died at 5 a.m. Sunday, July 4, in Mercy hospital in Dubuque. He had been in failing health for the last six months.

Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. E. Linkenmeyer was celebrant for the solemn requiem high Mass in St. Joseph's Catholic church at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Phillip Schmitt, assistant pastor, was deacon, and Rev. Donald Kruse of Cascade was sub-deacon.

The Kempter-Gallagher funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bittner was born Aug. 23, 1884 [in catholic records Grover is listed as Joseph, born Aug. 23, 1885, not 1884 as obit indicates] in Bellevue, a son of the late Louis and Mary Niemeyer Bittner. In 1914 Louis and Grover Bittner formed a partnership for the retail lumber business on North Second Street with Grover becoming sole owner in 1943 at the death of his father.

In 1943 Mr. Bittner bought the Siefert Lumber company at the south edge of the city and moved the Bittner firm to that location. The Bittner firm was sold in June 1962 to the firm that now operates Bellevue Lumber company in the same location.

Among his civic duties were six terms as mayor of Bellevue between 1936 and 1948 and a term as representative from Jackson county to the Iowa legislature in 1938. He was a member of the Bellevue fire department for 32 years, including 23 years as chief of the unit.

He served St. Joseph's church as treasurer for 25 years, was a member of the Bellevue council, Knights of Columbus, of Duborg assembly, Fourth Degree Knights. He was also a member of the Rosary Society of the church.

Mr. Bittner was a member of the Bellevue Garden club, and Bellevue Golf club.

Mr. Bittner married Frances Ernst Martin in 1915 at Bellevue. She died in 1945. He married Waive Ellen Ernst in 1946 and she survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. George (Ella) Zentner of Bellevue and Mrs. Lloyd B. (Rhoma) Wertz of Dubuque.

Beside his first wife we was preceded by three brothers and a sister.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will start at 11 a.m. today at Kempter-Gallagher Funeral Home here where the Rosary will be recited at 8 tonight.

Mr. Bittner was a former state representative and former mayor of Bellevue. He was born here Aug. 23, 1884. He married Frances Martin here in 1915. She died in 1945. Later he married Waive Ernst in Chicago. Surviving are his wife and two sisters.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday of last week for Grover J. Bittner, 79, who had died Sunday, July 4. Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. E. Linkenmeyer was celebrant of the solemn requiem Mass with Rev. Phillip Schmitt as deacon and Rev. Donald Kruse as sub deacon. Rev. B. W. Frommelt of Springbrook was in the sanctuary.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Fourth degree Knights of Columbus, Ben Mootz, Bob Ernst, Henry Wiuedner, Harry Dohlin, Virtus Clasen and Larry Lampe.
