Phyllis Henderson Carey, 92, of Delray Beach, FL and Exeter, NH passed away on September 26, 2016. Born in Arlington, MA of Leona (Day) and Warren J. Henderson. She spent her early years in Exeter, NH and Shaker Heights, OH where she graduated from the Laurel School, followed by graduation from Wellesley College in 1946. In 1957, Phyllis her husband, Frank L. Carey, Jr. and their son, Brenton H. Carey, moved from Cleveland, OH to Delray Beach, FL. They owned and operated a boating marina, Boat Square in Hypoluxo, FL for many years. Phyllis was active in community affairs serving on the Delray Beach Community Relations Board and the Beach Restoration Committee; President of the Church Women United and the Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Wellesley College Club. She founded and was first President of the League of Women Voters of South Palm Beach County (now the LWV of Palm Beach County). Phyllis was also the co-founder of the Community Child Care Center, now the Achievement Centers for Children and Families, in Delray Beach, FL. Served as a director of the State Board of the LWV of Florida and was on the board of the New Hampshire Music Festival. She loved music, reading, travel and cats. She was especially fond of choral music, having been a soloist with the Wellesley College Choir. She also sang with the Berkshire Choral Festival, the Delray Beach Chorale, and the choir of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Delray Beach, FL. Phyllis belonged to the Ocean Club of Florida in Ocean Ridge, FL and to the Abenaqui Country Club and Beach Club, both located in Rye Beach, NH.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her former husband; her brother, Florida State Senator, Warren S. Henderson, and her infant daughter, Marcia Gail. She is survived by her son, the Rev. Brenton H. Carey of Grand Rapids, MI and San Diego, CA; four grandchildren, Emily, Alison, Olivia, and Ian and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth H. Carey, all of San Diego, CA. Phyllis is also survived by her nephew, Warren C. Henderson and his wife, Linda of Rye Beach, NH; her nieces, Sunny Moss and Wendy Henderson of Sarasota, FL and Suzanne Carey-Fernandez of Haverhill, MA; and her nephews, Michael Towey of Belfast, ME and Paul Towey of Novato, CA. Additionally, Phyllis is survived by her loyal friend and companion, Margaret (Maggie) Fitzpatrick; companions, Sonia Totoli, Debra Marquis and Shontel Blutcher.

A memorial service will be held on November 25, 2016, at 10:00 AM, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH. Burial will follow at the Exeter Cemetery in Exeter.
