John Barkley Abernathy, 87, of Alexis, was a son to the late August and Ella Abernathy. He was predeceased by sisters, Margie Garrison, Jane Robinson, Virginia Abernathy, and Annie Mae Abernathy; brothers, Wade Abernathy, Luther Abernathy, Austin Abernathy, Bill Abernathy, and Hugh Abernathy.
John retired from J. P. Stevens after 47 years. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Stanley, where he served as deacon, elder and church treasurer. He was a thirty year veteran of Alexis Volunteer Fire Department where he also served on the board of directors. Aside from his family and church, John’s greatest love was deer hunting. Raised in a farming family with deep family values, John was very proud of his family and the church he grew up in. His grandfather was a founding father of First Presbyterian Church of Stanley. Growing up in rural America during a tough time strengthened John as a person with great values that served others with the best of grace. Married to Betty Ann for 65 years, they led a Godly life setting a great example for their children, grandchildren, family and friends.
