Barbara Wehrle Alexander, 75, of Rowlett, Texas, died on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, following a short illness.

She was born on April 8, 1941, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Francis (Pete) Wehrle and Grace Huey Wehrle.

A graduate of Mount Mercy College School of Nursing (now Carlow University) in Pittsburgh, she joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps and was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, where she met dental resident Dr. Roger Alexander. They were married on June 25, 1966.

She left Navy active duty to become a nursing school instructor in Portsmouth and was honorably discharged in 1968. After raising three sons, she resumed her nursing career as a school nurse and hearing specialist for the San Diego School District and, in 1990, the Dallas Independent School District, where she served as school nurse for two schools. Barbara retired in 1998.

During 17 years in San Diego, California, Barbara was a CCD teacher at the Mission Basilica, a Cub Scout pack leader and had a reputation as a fun-loving, family oriented, energetic, caring person who loved to cook. Kids knew her as "the Cookie Mother," and her wonderful facility with food preparation earned her the nickname "CookerBarb."

Losing her eldest and youngest sons to illness and battling numerous medical issues herself, Barbara remained a positive, empathetic individual with a huge heart, deeply loved by everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. Roger E. Alexander, DDS, of Rowlett, Texas; a son, Marc Alexander, Lt. Colonel, USMC, and wife Shawn, RDH; a daughter-in-law, Breige (Dan) Alexander; five grandchildren, Abigail, Adam, Victoria, Lance and Lauren, whose academic and athletic accomplishments filled her with pride and joy; and a sister, Jane Ann Wehrle (Bill) Spencer.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Matthew of San Diego, California, and Daniel, Capt., USA, of Helotes, Texas; and a sister, Nancy Wehrle Johnson of Haymarket, Virginia.

An ecumenical memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church of Rockwall, Texas. Barbara will be interred next to her son, Matthew, in the Garden of Reflection area of El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, California.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 3905 Hickox Rd., Rowlett, TX 75089, noting "Building Fund, Barbara Alexander" in the memo line.
