NELSON DAVID CHRISTIAN

Nelson David Christian, Rolla, Missouri, formerly of rural Maries County and Granite City, Illinois, died on September 25, 2016, at Phelps County Regional Medical Center, after having suffered a heart attack. He was 73.

David Christian was born March 4, 1943, in Granite City, Illinois, the son of Willis Clifford Christian and Rosetta May Nelson Christian. Mr. Christian was preceded in death by his father on January 24, 1957, his mother on September 26, 1994, and a brother, Willis Clifford Christian, on December 22, 1990. Survivors include one daughter, six siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends.

David Christian was born and raised in Granite City, Illinois. He grew up in West Granite and attended Granite City schools. He loved his grandparents, Tade and May Nelson, and liked to spend time at their home in Granite City. As a child, David demonstrated aptitude in science and mathematics. Mr. Christian learned and became proficient at Morse code very early, and became a lifelong FCC licensed amateur radio operator. His call letters were WØNFI.

As a young adult, Mr. Christian was active in drag racing, winning many race trophies in his black Pontiac, which he dubbed, "Big Black." Later, David moved to rural Dixon, Missouri, where he was a resident for almost four decades.

David Christian loved to read and had many diverse interests. He admired ants and bees and he was a beekeeper. He raised bonsai trees, and loved all trees. He liked to design and build printed circuits for radios. David loved the Canadian-American band Steppenwolf, German Shepherd Dogs, and Ronald Reagan. He liked to cook, and he had a good singing voice. He read history and was knowledgeable on the subject. He had an abiding interest in and love for the space program, and traveled to Kennedy Space Center in Florida to watch, from the beach, the launch of Apollo 11, on July 16, 1969.

It was Mr. Christian's request that his body be cremated. His family will place a memorial stone at Kenner Cemetery, near Hayden, Missouri, to remember his life.

A memorial service will be held for Nelson David Christian at the Eugene E. Northern Community Hall, 400 North Main Street, in Rolla, MO, on Friday, November 11, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. Everyone who knew Mr. Christian is invited to attend this service.
